From Bravo Dog Training

by april | December 6th, 2011

You know we love our clients, both the 2-legged and the 4-legged varieties, and we are very excited to be working with some new pups from Portland’s own Bravo Dog Training. Amber promises to give Pistol, Apple, and Timber the very best care this Holiday Season!

Check out the great mention, and many more tips, on the Bravo Dog Blog:

We have met our pet sitter – Amber from Hot Diggity! Dog Walking and Pet Sitting will be staying with Pistol, Apple and Timber over Christmas.  She came by for the initial visit, a chance to meet the dogs, see the house and go over the routine.

Of course Apple adored her, but Apple would go home with a jewel thief.  Pistol and Timber took a shining to her too though, so it’s a done deal.  Amber will be here to feed the dogs, let them outside, wipe off any muddy paws, rub any needy bellies and perform some other essential tasks, like feeding the fish, turning on and off lights, getting the mail and watering the plants (including the orchids from Florida which are blooming prolifically here in Oregon – someone forgot to tell them it’s not sunny, hot and humid!).

I feel confident that the dogs will be well cared for over Christmas.  And from experience, the most important thing in leaving your dogs, whether it is at a boarding kennel, for training or with a pet sitter, is that you are comfortable enough to not worry while you are gone.

Thanks Amber, we look forward to having you stay with our dogs!

Pet Food Drive

by april | November 17th, 2011

As Hot Diggity! grows, we continuously find ourselves drawn to giving back to our community. This Fall we are spotlighting The Pongo Fund, an all volunteer, non-profit public charity, and the only program in our area specifically designed to consistently provide quality dog and cat food for the animals of anyone in need. From now until Thanksgiving we are holding a food donation drive so contact us if you are interested in giving!

If we already coming by for dog walking or pet sitting, all you need to do is leave your pet food donation (please leave a note stating it is for the drive) next to our notepad on your counter or near where you store your leash, (if you’re going out of town for the holiday, you can still leave it behind for us) and we’ll turn it all in on Dec 1st. If we have a good response, we’ll let you know and we’ll do it again in December.

Halloween Tips and Treats

by april | October 27th, 2011

Dogs get a lot of love on the Hot Diggity! Dog Walking + Pet Sitting Blog, so with Halloween less than a week away, we decided it was time to let the season inspire some tips for all you (black) cat lovers!

Feline fashionistas can find all sorts of clever costumes at local pet stores, whether your pet is more of a pirate or a princess.

In general, cats don’t have a sweet tooth, but it’s important to remember that chocolate is just as toxic for cats as it is for dogs. Be sure to keep candy securely stored and consider treating kitty to one of these delightful treats from
Pet Candy instead!

Halloween brings many ghoulish visitors to the door and has the power to transform even the mildest family member into a monster. If your cat gets anxious around all of this activity, using a flower essence like Rescue Remedy can help calm her down.

And finally, a cautionary tale. Though we are some of most devoted animal lovers around, we know that this is also the time of year when many cats get stolen. And if you are attempting to rehome a black cat, don’t allow a stranger to adopt him. Most shelters won’t adopt out black cats during the entire month of October. Just to be safe, it’s best to keep your cat, black, white, or calico, indoors.

If you prefer to enjoy the fun without worrying about your puppies and kitties, give us a call for pet sitting over the weekend or on Halloween night. We still have availability for both pet sitters and dog walkers and we would love to help you have a safe and stress-free holiday!

Remember, the holiday season is right around the corner, and we’re already plenty booked for Thanksgiving and Christmas! For priority reservations and the best chance of snagging your favorite pet sitter, please have your Thanksgiving appointments booked no later than Tuesday November 8th and Friday December 2nd for Yule appointments.

For the Love of Shelter Dogs

by april | October 6th, 2011

Yesterday Hot Diggity! Dog Walking + Pet Sitting had the pleasure of attending a client’s Wellness Fair, and we were amazed by how many people have or are planning to adopt shelter dogs. We love Portland!

October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month so, if you are thinking about bringing home your own four-legged bundle of joy, take this opportunity to turn your intentions into reality! And, just in case you need a little extra push, read on for Dogster’s 10 Compelling Reasons to Add a Shelter Dog to Your Life:

1. As the environmentally conscious recycling movement has proven, it’s easy (and fun!) being green, and dog adoption is the noblest form of recycling. One person’s trash (boo!) is another’s treasured pet.

2. Every year, millions of healthy, sweet, soulful dogs are killed at animal shelters across this country just for lack of cage space; as with people, bad luck can cause good dogs to become homeless through no fault of their own. By adopting a shelter dog, you’re doing your part to help end the nationwide crisis of homelessness.

3. With so many charismatic celebrities walking around with adopted dogs by their side, it’s clear that adoption isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the cool thing to do. To your adopted dog, you’re the resident rock star!

4. You know all those people who are so proud of their honor-student kids? Well, adopted dogs are super-smart, the Mensas of muttdom. So skip the bumper sticker — flaunt stray pride with a cool collar or T-shirt. Even your coffee can proclaim pride for pound pups!

5. Don’t you want somebody to love? Somebody who will actually love you back? For anyone who’s ever suffered the pangs of unrequited affection — and who hasn’t? — rest assured that an adopted dog will return those tender feelings tenfold. No more lonely nights!

6. If you’ve had it up to here with criticism from your nearest and dearest, get used to unconditional K9 adoration. Years of psychotherapy can’t hold a candle to an adopted dog’s uncomplaining, adoring presence. “Dinner’s late? Again? I adore you!”

7. Got performance anxiety about trying out a new hobby or activity? With an adopted dog as your nonjudgmental audience or workout partner, there’s nothing to fear: From exercise routines to gourmet cooking to knitting, your efforts will get an A+ even if they deserve a D!

8. Adopting a dog proves you’re a person of great inner depth who values substance (a mystery dog of unknown parentage) over style (a predictable pedigreed purebred).

9. But hey, if you’re a style hound, there’s no more stylin’ statement than a shelter dog — s/he coordinates beautifully with any outfit or style of decor!

10. Are you a political animal? Then reaffirm your faith in the democratic process with an adopted dog. After all, shelter mutts are the people’s dog: E Pluribus Unum, one dog out of many. Uncle Sam wants YOU to adopt today!

What are you waiting for?

Massage is a great way to maintain your dog’s health and well-being, in addition to regular veterinary visits. After a long dog run or trip to the dog park, a massage will increase you pet’s circulation and flush waste products from the muscle tissues. Consider giving your dog a massage when you return from your travels – this can be a great way to reconnect after the pet sitter departs.

A sweet treat for a dreary day

by april | September 26th, 2011

Some pets will eat anything – even things you’d rather they didn’t – while others have more refined tastes. You want to feed your pets healthy options, but everyone deserves a treat now and then. If store bought treats just don’t cut it, show your love for your dog or cat with one of these homemade options. Not only will you have a warm and inviting kitchen on a dreary day, you’ll impress your friends with your ingenuity!

Bad Breath Banishers (they’re gluten-free!)

2 cups brown rice flour
1 Tablespoon activated charcoal (find this at drugstores, not the briquets!)
3 Tablespoons canola oil
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped fresh mint
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
2/3 cup lowfat milk

Preheat oven to 400F. Lightly oil a cookie sheet. Combine flour and charcoal. Add all the other ingredients.Drop teaspoonfulls on oiled sheet, about 1 inch apart. Bake 15-20 minutes. Store in airtight container in the refrigerator.
Everyone deserves a birthday treat!

Party Pupcakes

1 large apple
1 1/2 cups wheat flour
1/4 cup oatmeal
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons honey 2 eggs
1 cup grated cheddar cheese

For the Frosting
8 oz Neufchatel Cheese (lowfat cream cheese)
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
2 tablespoons honey
2-3 tablespoons flour

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 ° F (200 ° C). Grease muffin tins.

Core, slice and mince the apple (use a food processor if you have one). Set aside. In a large bowl, mix together flour, oatmeal, baking powder, and baking soda. In a medium bowl, blend together the yogurt, water, oil, honey, and eggs, then stir in the apple and cheese. Add to the flour mixture and stir until mixed.

Spoon into the muffin tins, filling each cup about three-quarters full. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean. Let rest in the muffin tins for a few minutes, then remove and set aside to cool.

For the frosting, combine the Neufchatel cheese (at room temperature), honey, and yogurt until smooth. Add enough flour to thicken the frosting to a good spreading consistency. Frost the pupcakes and you’re ready for a doggone good party!

Makes 16-18 pupcakes. If you prefer a single-layer cake, spoon the batter into a sheet pan and bake for an extra 15-20 minutes (or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean). Let the cake cool, then frost and decorate.

Cat Crackers

6 ounces of undrained tuna
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup flour
1/3 cup water

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Measure all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix thoroughly with your hands. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into treat sized pieces. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden. Let cool. Give to your cat and watch them gobble it up.

Cheese Treats au Naturel

¾ cup shredded or grated cheddar cheese
¾ cup whole wheat flour
¼ cup sour cream or yogurt (plain)
¼ cup cornmeal
5 tbsp. grated parmesan cheese

While your oven is preheating to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, combine all the ingredients into dough (add a touch of water if needed). Knead the dough into a ball and then roll it out to ¼ inch. Cut into one-inch pieces and bake for 25 minutes on a greased cookie sheet.

So, though our dog walking and pet sitting services don’t specifically cover baking, our errand service and pet goods delivery could certainly include tracking down homemade dog biscuits in Portland, and if your pet sitter also bakes dog cookies, so much the better!
